Caño Negro Wetlands Wildlife Refuge in Costa Rica

The National Wildlife Refuge Caño Negro extends to 9.940 hectares.  It is located in the region of Los Chiles and Guatuso in the providence of Alajuela.  Caño Negro conserves one of the most important wetlands in Costa Rica.  It is considered to be important internationally because it serves as a shelter for a great quantity of migratory species, species almost in extinction and species that are of commercial importance.

The Caño Negro Lake is a superficial freshwater lake that extends to 800 acres.  There is a drain of stagnant water from the adjacent river Frio and its tributary river Monica.

The area where the Caño Negro lagoon is and the surrounding areas make up one of the most diverse and vitally important biological areas for the maintenance of the quality of the environment in the northern zone of the country.

In addition, Caño Negro makes up a habitat for a great variety of species of vegetation and wildlife like the Jabiru, a species in grave danger of extinction.  This concentration of natural resources makes this area of international importance.  Since it is next to the wet zones in the southern part of the Lake in Nicaragua, it makes it one of the most outstanding wet zones in Mesoamerica.

This refuge is a source of food for the migratory birds from the north.  There are different species of plants and animals that you will not find in other parts of the country.  There is a great abundance of birds and fish for human consumption.  It is one of the few areas where you will find the needle fish or the Gaspar.  This fish has been described as a living fossil.
