The Venado Caverns are approximately 2 million years old. Limestone is an oceanic sediment product and is about 7 to 30 million years old. These caverns are the products of erosion and friction from sub terrain rivers forming these mazes, corridors and rooms of up to 8 meters high and 10 meters wide. To go into the Venado Caverns, you need to take a good lantern with you. The journey can last up to 4 hours. There are interesting formations like the coral (room number 2), stalactites, stalagmites, the papaya (it is a column formed by the union of a stalactite and a stalagmite).
The Venado Caverns were discovered in 1963 by the villagers in the area when by chance the prisoner that the mountain dogs were chasing took refuge in the opening of what today is called the main entrance. This peaked the curiosity of the people to the point that it reached the ears of speleologists (geologists that study caverns) and this started a wide investigation and exploration that continues today.
The Venado Caverns are located only 45 minutes from the Arenal Springs Resort Hotel in the northern part of the village Venado of San Carlos. There are two daily excursions leaving Arenal Springs at 8:00am and 2:00pm. It would be good to take extra clothes to whichever activity.
Visit the Venado caves it’s very easy from the Arenal Volcano the Venado caves are a world on its own the Venado caves are only 1 hour away from the Arenal Volcano Visit the Venado Caves and enjoy.
