Previously they were found by the border with Nicaragua, above the river in Rio Frio and in the islands Solentiname, San Carlos de Nicaragua, Los Chiles and Upala.
In present day, it is a minority village in terms of native population that has an indigenous population of approximately 460 people. Today the schools are bilingual and they are trying to conserve their traditions and customs. As a consequence of the damaged environment and other cultural factors, it has drastically reduced opportunities for the Malekus to build their traditional housing, as well as other traditional practices related to hunting, agriculture and handmade crafts. Respecting the houses, they are constructed with natural materials in a rectangular shape on top of stakes and do not have walls.
