Fishing in lake Arenal in the Arenal Volcano

The Arenal Lake in the Arenal Volcano area is the perfect scenario for doing sport fishing.  The fish in this lake are primarily Guapote.  It is a fish that has an incredible taste and is native to this region in Costa Rica.

To do sport fishing in Arenal Lake, we leave at 5:30am from the Arenal Springs Resort Hotel.  We offer you options to fish for half the day or the whole day.  The tour includes a boat, fishing equipment and a guide.

To cast in the middle of the waters, the technique of Stop & Go is definitely the best to catch the most Guapote.  This technique consists in a continuous act of casting out, letting your bait go deep in order to get back a certain amount of line, stopping for a few seconds in order to go deep again and then start to bring back the line again.  During this last action, it would be good to give slight throws of the wrist in order to increase the interest in the Guapote.

Another technique that works in catching Guapotes is the Slow Roll where the net goes to a normal speed so that its own weight makes it go deeper and the tail of the rope goes to the depth that we give it, which without doubt will attract the Guapotes.  Depending on the speed that you bring the net in, we can explore different levels of the water and with that you can find out where are the Guapotes.

2. Fishing reel that you prefer for bait casting.
3. Bait, those indicated in the script.
4. It is recommended to fish for Guapote at sunrise, very early and at sunset.  These are the times that you will catch the most Guapotes.
5. As we have emphasized, the guapote likes to live near sunken trunks, water plants and below water lilies.  For this, it is recommended to put the bait as close as you can by them.  If you are casting and you come near them, it is recommended to pass by very slowly.
6. For casteo fishing (stationary), it is recommended to use visible colors, fluorescents, gold, silvers, yellows, greens, white with a red head and for the troleo type of fishing (moving) dark colors.  It is preferred to use bait that has black on it somewhere.
7. ecause the Guapote is a species that likes to attack artificial bait, it is recommended to use this type of bait, not only to increase your chances of catching more, but it will help add to the maximum adventure to see the Guapote in all its splendor violently attacking it.
8. It is recommended to use a pole at least 30 or 40 centimeters long, stronger than the main line because in the habitat where we will find them it is common that the line will hit different things, so a strong pole guarantees us that our line will not break.
9. Due to the high depredation that man has done again this beautiful and powerful species, we recommend that you are conscience of this and practice CATCH and RELEASE for those small catches and do not use them for consumption.
