The National park Tenorio Volcano is surrounded by incomparable natural beauty. It is located between the districts of Guatuzo and Upala of Alajuela, Cañas, Bagaces and Tilaran in the Guanacaste providence. One of the most attractive tourist’s points of the eastern National Park is the Río Celeste. Here you can observe a natural and chemical phenomenon when you get to point where the water is “dyed.” At this point an effect caused by the gases that come from depths of the river and the calcium carbonate precipitation that is carried by a tributary that comes from the main river causes the water color to become light blue. This is why the river is called Rio Celeste- the light blue river.
There are several tour options to visit the Celeste River. You can go in a 4X4 vehicle from Arenal Volcano. The trip will take between 1.5 and 2 hours. The majority of the tours start with a hike that lasts about 2 hours through the rain forest always viewing the Celeste River and the extensive vegetation along the paths.
In the course of the river, a splendid light blue waterfall forms. In addition to this great attraction, you will find hot water springs on the edges of the Celeste River that can be enjoyed by its visitors. The Tenorio Volcano National Park is the home of thousands of different plants and trees as well as abundant wildlife like the wild boar, jaguar, puma and monkeys among others.
This is the true rainforest with precipitation of more than 4,000 millimeters each year. The rainy season is from May to January and the average temperature is 25 degrees Celsius. Consult our lobby about the tours to Celeste River. The departures from the Arenal Springs Hotel are at 6:00am and 8:00am.
